Watch: Maynard James Keenan Performing an Early Version of Tool’s “Sober” with His Band Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty

This one’s for all the hardcore Tool geeks. We’ve discovered a video in our Internet travels that is both eye-popping and kind of amazing. The video below features a band known then as Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty (or abbreviated C.A.D.) performing on Public Access TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The man singing is none other than Maynard James Keenan of Tool/Puscifer/A Perfect Circle.

Even more interesting is that the song the band plays–which Keenan names “Burn About Out”–is clearly a very early version of what became Tool’s breakout hit “Sober.” The tempo of the song and chorus are completely different, but otherwise, the verses are all pieces of what ended up on Tool’s version of the song. Enjoy this little seen piece of music history below along with the version that came later with Tool. Also, hard to know for certain who the other players are in this video, but research indicates at least one of them is a man named Kevin Horning.
