A Spirit That Will Never Die
When you hear that Neurosis members, Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till joining forces with Scott “Wino” Weinrich to come together collaborate on an album, you think you know exactly where this is going to lead too. Throw in the songs of Townes Van Zandt, and you’re left wondering where this potential roller coaster of a ride is going to leave you. In one short word, mesmerized. The threesome of metal music gurus collaborated on Songs of Townes Van Zandt to create this nine-song compilation album where each individually performs raw and appropriately minimalistic versions of the iconic, songwriter of songwriters, Van Zandt’s music.
Tormenting tales of Americana stripped raw with a modern twist is what makes up Songs of Townes Van Zandt. Kelly, Von Till and Weinrich split up the album each taking a third of the melancholic homage to Van Zandt. Kelly’s “St. John The Gambler” is a compilation of delicate and sorrowful strings and pace that is equally as haunting. Wino’s “Rake” that is equally vulnerable in its acoustic guitar strings while Von Till’s “The Snake Song” is lethargically paced with what appears to be only Von Till and a steady synth to create an emotionally raw song.
Songs of Townes Van Zandt is an absolute must hear album that is stunning at its core. The threesome and their acoustic make up of this album are hauntingly beautiful and a rare treat that you’d be hard pressed not to love.
