Nina Arianda to Star as Janis Joplin in New Joplin Film

A long-overdue biopic on the latter days of the prolific singer Janis Joplin has landed an award-winning director and award-winning leading lady.

Tony-award winning actress Nina Arianda will star as Ms. Joplin herself. This will be Arianda’s first on-screen appearance in a starring role; the singer/actress is most known for her Tony-winning performance in the broadway production, Venus in Fur.

The film will be directed by Sean Durkin, the 30-year-old whose successful first film, Marthy Marcy May Marlene (it won a Dramatic Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011), starred Elizabeth Olsen.

The indie director is sporting some seriously not-so-indie bragging rights with this film: a $20 million budget; the rights to Joplin’s best-known songs; the arrangements of her then-backing band, Big Brother and the Holding Company; and a collection of the singer’s written letters, called Love, Janis, that was posthumously published by Joplin’s sister, Laura Joplin. The film will focus on the last six months of Joplin’s life. According to imdb.com, the film is still in pre-production and does not yet have a release date.
