Canadian DJ/Author Kid Koala is set to release his new album, 12 Bit Blues, on British label Ninja Tune in September.
The album’s sound is based around the E-mu SP-1200 sampler, an old-school beat machine that is a symbol of Hip Hop’s “golden age” (back when Run-DMC ran the scene). In the spirit of old-school music, Koala is amalgamating the powers of the E-mu SP-1200 with the vintage stylings of blues music.
Kid Koala’s genre-crossing comes as no surprise here considering he hails from a classical music background and has also played with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans (as told to mxdwn.com in 2011).
Using the machine’s pads and a multi-track, Koala played each part of the tracks out in real time, reviving a time-consuming method of producing that is no longer popular.
A limited edition of the LP will come with a cardboard turntable kit when pre-ordered on Ninja Tune’s website.
