On Memorial Day weekend, talk of The Flaming Lips‘ attempting to shatter Jay-Z’s Guinness World Record had begun and now the plan is set in motion. Read on to find out.
In 2006, Jay-Z performed live shows in seven different cities within 24 hours. Six years later, The Flaming Lips’ attempt calls for shows in eight cities, beginning in Memphis on June 27 and ending in New Orleans the next day. Each city and venue is listed below along with the opening acts.
06/27 – 4:30 P.M.: Memphis, TN – W.C. Handy Park (with New Fumes)
06/27 – 6:30 P.M.: Clarksdale, MS – Ground Zero Blues Club (with Hour of the Time Majesty 12)
06/27 – 9:30 P.M.: Oxford, MS – The Lyric Oxford (with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals)
06/28 – 1:00 A.M.: Jackson, MS – Duling Hall (with Neon Indian)
06/28 – 6:30 A.M.: Hattiesburg, MS – Benny’s Boom Boom Room (with Jackson Browne)
06/28 – 9:45 A.M.: Biloxi, MS – Hard Rock Casino – Biloxi’s Wet Spot Pool (with Phantogram)
06/28 – 1:30 P.M.: Baton Rouge, LA – Varsity Theatre (with GIVERS opening, performing with Linear Downfall)
06/28 – 5:00 P.M.: New Orleans, LA – House of Blues (with Grimes, Roger Daltrey and ???)
The Flaming Lips will be traveling from venue to venue on board the “Endeavour,” an old tour bus and will be followed by MTV’s camera crews. These “mini-set” performances are also combined with MTV’s O Music Awards.
Each performance will be streaming live. Proceeds will be donated to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation. Their album, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, will also be released June 26 as a collaborative Record Day album available digitally and on a CD.
UPDATE 6/22: The Flaming Lips just posted a new video detailing an updated list of their performances along their attempt to break the 24-hour record. Interesting to note, this new list confirms pics lead singer Wayne Coyne tweeted on 6/19 indicating some schedule changes that list different performers than previously announced via Pitchfork and the band’s press releases. According to Coyne in the video, on 6/28 in Hattiesburg they’ll be performing with Jackson Browne.
Additionally, he indicates that on the final stop performing with Grimes, they may have a special unnamed guest and also they may perform a song with The Who’s Roger Daltrey. Coyne explained that they will be performing 2 songs with each band. In Oxford, they should be performing two Led Zeppelin songs with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. At least one of those two Led Zeppelin songs appears to be “The Song Remains the Same” as indicated by Coyne in tweet on Twitter.
