A recent British Volkswagen commercial has infuriated Beach House because the band thinks that the ad rips off “Take Care” from Teen Dream. Watch the video that sparked the controversy after the jump.
Here is the formal apology issued by VW:
We greatly respect the talent of Beach House and never set out to replicate a specific song of theirs or anyone else’s. Most important to us was to find a track which matched the narrative of the advert, telling the story of the daughter’s growing up and the evolving relationship with her father, and we believe we have achieved this in the final edits.
To this apology, Beach House tweeted “VW cop out big time.” As reported by Pitchfork, Beach House might take legal action but are concerned about costs.
Perhaps what is most incriminating about the VW Polo Dad advertisement, is that the ad agency, DDB, reportedly approached Beach House five times about the ad opportunity. Although VW claims that they just wanted that dream pop sound, the whole thing smells like thievery.
