Lemonade – Diver

A Smooth Concoction

Lemonade is an alternative dance band trio consisting of Callan Clendenin (vocalist), Ben Steidel (bassist), and Alex Pasternak (drummer.) The band formed in 2005, hailing from San Francisco, CA. Diver is the band’s second album set for release on May 29, 2012.

Diver is sensual sounding, the songs have a smooth quality to them making it an enjoyable listen. This band is a little reminiscent of Depeche Mode, (a mellower version), at times Clendenin’s vocals may remind you of Dave Gahan’s. There’s definitely an 80’s nostalgic sound overall. An ecclectic mix of different music styles is on this album, ranging from electronica, indie, r&b, house, and pop. It all blends together well, accented by sensual vocals throughout. A lovelorn type of feeling is conveyed in the lyrics, such as in the song “Softkiss”; “When it’s cold, do you still wear my coat?/These tears are falling/now I know it doesn’t mean the same to you.” “Ice Water” is a more upbeat, catchy, and fun song. The track “Eye Drops” has an interesting ethnic sounding vocal intro, followed by a somewhat melodic piano. Overall this album is a pleasant listen, it’s a little bit like taking a stroll down a memory lane in the 80s/early 90s. The name of this band alone conjures up thoughts of warm summer nights.

This album is recommended for nostalgic fans of 80s music and, also, for fans of bands like Washed Out. Diver is as smooth as a tall glass of, well, you know.
