The Colors Of Spring
The Spring Standards, an independent three-piece folk-rock band from New York, just released their double EP entitled yellow//gold. Joining forces to create the talented trio that make up the Spring Standard are James Cleare (vocals, acoustic, bass guitars, drums), Heather Robb (vocals, melodica, keyboard, glockenspiel, drums) and James Smith (vocals, acoustic, bass, harmonica, trumpet, drums). A perfectly constructed collage of musical mastery broken up into twelve songs split again into two different distinct worlds.
yellow begins the immediately fun adventure with seven songs provoking the nostalgia of the beauty and innocence of youth. With tender strings, wistful piano cords, and catchy indie folk rock beats, it’s easy to get transported to a time of warmth and whimsy that often comes with pre-adolenscence, especially with standout opener, “Only Skin” where Robb’s vocals are showcased beautifully. While yellow is soft and generally more lighthearted, gold is bold and triumphant; both beautifully juxtaposing one another. The true highlight of the double EP is “Nightmare,” which starts off gold. A song that brings out the best of the folksy trio’s talents-energizing claps, devilish beats, sultry vocals, and off-beat lyrics while having gold finish with a bang – is “Unmarked Pill,” an epic electro-pop number with jazzy horns, steady drum beat, and blending harmonies.
As uniquely laid out as yellow//gold is, it’s ability to blend the two distinctive different styles both vocally and instrumentally, is a rare feat and one that the Spring Standards sure will surpass again and again.
