Against Me! vocalist Tom Gabel reveals his plans to begin living as a woman in the new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. Gabel had privately dealt with gender dysphoria for years, and will soon begin the process of transition through taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
Gabel will eventually go under the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife, Heather. The name Laura was previously hinted in their song “The Ocean,” where it hinted within the lyrics, “And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman, My mother once told me she would have named me Laura.”
There is also a live recording from March 19th of Gabel performing what is now known a deeply person and unreleased track called “Transgender Dysphoria Blues.”
In the new issue, Gabel speaks about her history of gender dysphoria, the specifics of the transition process and what becoming Laura Jane Grace will mean for Against Me!’s future. Even though Rolling Stone Magazine claims Gabel is the first openly transgender musician to talk about her experiences, other musicians such as formerly Life of Agony vocalist Keith Mina Caputo had made a similar announcement last year.
