Neil Young Applies for Trademarks for New Audio Format

Via Rolling Stone – Neil Young, inventor? The apparently tech-savvy Neil Young has apparently been working on patenting a high-definition alternative to the mp3 format.

In documents Rolling Stone uncovered, Young applied for 6 different trademarks, all related to “high resolution music.” Young has voiced frustration in the past over the low quality of current audio formats. He even discussed the matter with Steve Jobs, saying after the latter passed away that “Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music. But when he went home, he listened to vinyl. And you’ve gotta believe that if he’d lived long enough, he would eventually have done what I’m trying to do.”

Young can expect about a year for the legal process to play out, says Rolling Stone, but if there are no objections he will get his trademarks. Just don’t tell him that .FLAC already exists.
