Despite claims that the band would never reform, Al Jourgensen just couldn’t stay away. After a 5-year absence, industrial metal legends Ministry have returned to once again ignite public discourse with their vitriolic critiques of society. On their twelfth studio album, Relapse, it’s more of the band’s patented grooves, and more of the politics.

Jourgensen has always been highly critical of politics, religion, and the current state of America, but he takes it to a whole new level on Relapse. Included on the album are lengthy rants in many of the songs, covering such topics as the music industry (“Ghouldiggers”), the justice system (“Kleptocracy”), and voting (“Git Up Get Out ‘N’ Vote”). Jourgensen also includes a timely tribute to the Occupy movement, aptly titled “99%”. However, the band is careful not to let the message overtake the music. The infectious electro-thrash of “Double Tap” and post-apocalyptic strains of “Weekend Warrior” are every bit as driving and danceable as anything the band has put out. And the simple, powerful shout-along chorus of “99%” will have audiences chanting with the band for years to come.

Without question, Ministry has mastered the arts of industrial and heavy metal music, and proves once again that they know how to combine the two genres into one powerful, hook-laden tapestry. Fans of Ministry will not be disappointed by Relapse. As well, fans of industrial music in general, and fans of political rock will want to give this a spin. If you want to bang your head while reconsidering your worldview, Relapse is your album.
