We all know J Mascis as the guitarist behind Dinosaur Jr, a band known for its signature guitar playing. So the fact that Macsis is bringing back his old band Heavy Blanket and that they’re releasing a new album should be big news. However the circumstance behind Heavy Blanket is unique; Heavy Blanket is J Mascis’ new/old band. With Johnny Pancake and Pete Cougar, the trio wrote most of these songs around 1984 but due to a severe injury Heavy Blanket was put on hold and Mascis formed Dinosaur Jr. The album that is being releasing on May 8th is their debut record.
Heavy Blanket was originally inspired by a dissatisfaction with the punk rock community. Eager to bring rock in a dark and “heavy” direction, Mascis, Pancake, and Cougar bring the psychedelic feedback and robust noise in this instrumental project that is Heavy Blanket.
