Original Postcard Found that Inspired Neutral Milk Hotel’s ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ Cover

An interesting piece of folklore from the indie-rock band Neutral Milk Hotel has recently surface in an antique shop in New Jersey.  According to Prefix, the antique shop holds a postcard that inspired the artwork for one of the band’s album covers, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea.

The postcard displays a young girl in a bonnet waving as she stares off in the distance.  For the band’s album, however, artist Chris Bilheimer replace the girl’s face with a potato.  He also added a few other minor details.  The picture below traces the evolution of the postcard art to the actual album cover.
