When first listening to The Twilight Sad’s No One Can Ever Know, what immediately stands out is the suggestion of the seventies and eighties in music. There’s that kind of out-of-this-world sound about them.

James Graham’s vocals are reminiscent of old UK punk bands, although it sounds more Celtic in origin. No One Can Ever Know is definitely alternative, as far as the melodies go, while the whole album emanates a psychedelic rock vibe reminiscent of bands like the Cure. The songs are not hard but rather soft and melodic.

The stand out songs include “Don’t Move”, “Nil”, and “Not Sleeping” especially, which has a haunting, sad, and yet soft sound with a continuous beat that really pulls you into the song with its lyrics that gives you a feeling of loss from the songwriter’s perspective. This album will not appeal to everyone, but it does have some good songs and it is worth a listen for those that like alternative and slight psychedelic music. It takes on a different tone and style then most people are used to listening to, however, that is all part of expanding your horizons when you enjoy listening to music, isn’t it? This No One Can Ever Know is definitely a one of kind listening experience; one that you have to hear to appreciate.
