For those of you who might not have heard, the Deftones bassist, Chi Cheng, has been in a coma for three and a half years. When he was in Santa Clara in late 2008, he was involved in a 60 mph crash that has left him unconscious for three and a half years. Now, as reported by Antiquiet, Cheng is showing steady signs of recovery.
The car crash in 2008 left Cheng in need of intensive surgery. While he was in early treatment, his family’s insurance company cut off coverage, which put an immense strain on them to cover his financial costs. The Deftones have played numerous benefits to raise money for his treatment, but the family still finds themselves strapped for cash. Fans who want to help can head over to Cheng’s website, OneLoveForChi, to see how his condition is progressing and make donations.
Though it has been a long road to recovery, the situation looks optimistic. As of recent, he has displayed an ability to respond to basic commands, such as moving his leg upon instruction, and vocalizing through use of basic sounds.
