Don Cornelius, the creator of the television show, Soul Train, has passed away.

Don Cornelius on Soul Train

Cornelius is thought of by many as a visionary, having benefited the mainly African Amercian community with his show. It offered to audiences a connection to the artists that many were fond of in the day, and that continue to be influential on music now. Entertainers like Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, and Natalie Cole all appeared as guests over the show’s almost four decade run.

In 2005, thanks to his creation of the show, Cornelius was entered into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. There is no doubt that the show had a lasting impact on its audiences’ way of enjoying music. Many people credit Soul Train for teaching them new dances, and introducing them to so many different musicians.

The cause of death seems to have been a self inflicted gunshot, but there are not many more details than that. Cornelius was found in his home this past Wednesday. The time of death was made official at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
