The Flaming Lips always seem to outdo themselves. They had to outdo their double album by covering Dark Side of the Moon. Once that tour had finished up, they released a 24-hour song encased in human skulls before they could go on to collaborate in separate projects with the Plastic Ono Band and Neon Indian. As the new year has come around, frontman Wayne Coyne has news about a new album that might include some of their most ambitious and diverse collaborations to date.
As Coyne reported to Rolling Stone, the project is already under way. Of the many artists who have been rumored to be involved in this collaborative album, some have already completed their work while others still remain in a state of uncertainty.
It has been confirmed by Coyne that Nick Cave, Edward Sharpe, Yoko Ono, and Neon Indian have already begun recording for the project in “remotely managed, sometimes logistically tricky recording sessions.” The newest addition to this all-star lineup is Bon Iver. In his interview with Rolling Stone, Coyne commented that Justin Vernon is currently in the process of sending two different tracks over to The Flaming Lips for the project.
Coyne is still trying to convince Erykah Badu, Lykke Li, and Ke$ha to jump on board. The band is hoping for an April release, which puts a certain immediacy to resolving these final options. When Ke$ha came up as a surprising choice, Coyne commented “We knew that she was a fan. There are a lot of these sort of druggy outlets out there that people connected through” and that he had no doubt they would get along well, since like him, “she’s a freak.”
