Alice in Chains has announced plans for follow-up to their successful 2009 comeback album Black Gives Way to Blue. According to Rolling Stone, the group began writing the currently-unnamed album last year, and have plans to head into the studio early this year.
The forthcoming album is the second from the group since former lead singer Layne Staley died of drug overdose in 2002. Staley, who struggled with a severe drug addiction in the final years of his life, penned over half of the group’s total lyric catalog leading up to 2009’s Black Gives Way to Blue. According to group co-founder Jerry Cantrell, the album was a belated goodbye to the prolific and talented Staley.
Singer William Duvall will take the place of Staley for the second time since the critically acclaimed Black Gives Way to Blue. The forthcoming album bridges an unplanned three-year gap between the 2009 effort and this year’s release after Cantrell underwent surgery last year.
“I had shoulder surgery. I had to get some bone spurs and torn cartilage taken care of, so that put me back a little bit,” he says. “But we’ve been writing through the whole process.”
