The Flaming Lips, along with Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band have released a joint EP, and have streamed several additional tracks, available after the jump. The releases finish a busy December for the Lips who lately appeared at their New Year’s Freak Out #5 with the Plastic Ono Band. It was there that the groups jointly released their collaborative EP, marking the last reveal of the near-monthly 2011 releases.
The release rounds out a collaboration and cover-heavy year for the Lips. The New Years Eve Freakout included six John Lennon covers, in addition to covers of “Give Peace a Chance,” and “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” with the Plastic Ono Band and a twenty minute cover of the Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” with guitarist Nels Cline.
An additional treat has been designed into the limited release album art; 600 of the total release of the limited edition 12” vinyl records glow in the dark, and the total 2,000 have a psychedelic, multicolor design by Daniel Huffman. Each record will have its own design, all personally created by Huffman.
In a gastronomic twist, the Flaming Lips have revealed special plans for their next release. The Aspen Times reports that their forthcoming 2012 effort will be “a batch of songs to be sold in a psychedelic gummy frog. The frogs will have powder sprinkled on them that is meant to be licked off; the idea was inspired by the South American toads that, when licked, can cause hallucinations.”
The psychedelic gummy frog will reportedly be available sometime this month.
