Dan Nelson, the former singer of Anthrax, has recently filed a lawsuit in New York against his band. Nelson is suing Anthrax for over $2.5 million for failing to pay royalties and for ex-bandmates reporting false statements about his departure from the band.
Just before his sudden departure, Nelson had been spending his time writing and recording vocal work on what would become Anthrax’ tenth studio album, Worship Music. Before the album was released, Anthrax briefly replaced Nelson with John Bush, who also left the band before Worship Music could surface. Joey Belladonna, the band’s former frontman rejoined the band to complete the vocal work that Nelson had started.
Anthrax’s failure to pay proper royalties to what Nelson is claiming to be co-writing credits on Worship Music is only one of the two qualms that Nelson has with his former metal outfit. He is also suing his former band for the “intentional defamation” of his career. Nelson alleges drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello and guitarist Scott Ian have caused damage to his credibility by discussing his abrupt departure in interviews. In one interview, a band member even referred to him as a “bully.” According to their claims, Anthrax was forced to cancel their upcoming tour because he left the band so suddenly due to illness.
Soon, time will tell whether Anthrax is forced to pay Dan Nelson the requested $2.5 million in royalties and damages.
