Canadian electro-pop duo Memoryhouse have announced a February 28 release date for their first full length album release, entitled The Slideshow Effect, out on Sub Pop Records. Composed of classical music student/ pop music encylopedist Evan Abeele and photographer Denise Nouvion, Memoryhouse was originally intended to be a multimedia art piece, synthesizing the union of art and music, and was named for German neo-classical composer/artist Max Richter’s influential 2001 album of the same name.
As Abeele explained in an interview with Pitchfork, “for me, in my musical development, there was a ‘before Memoryhouse and an ‘afteMemoryhouse…Hearing that fundamentally changed the way I approached composition. I just wanted to pay tribute to that. I wanted to have that to ground us, wherever we took our own music.”
The Slideshow Effect is being produced by Abeele with assistance from friend, collaborator and occasional Memoryhouse bassist Barzin Hassani Rad. Nouvion’s voice is more prominent on this record, and the new approach to composition sees the band transforming from a “bedroom recording project” into a mature band.
“The album is a big leap for us, but it’s also a completely organic one,” Nouvion said in a recent press release.
