Folk sensations The Mountain Goats have announced dates for their upcoming string of live appearances, beginning on January 19 in Austin, Texas. The group also made two December appearances in Chicago and Los Angeles, and will move on in January to cover ground from Austin to London.
The tour will preview a batch of all-new material, a rare treat for audiences unused to such generosity in the age of immediate digital posting.
In a post on the group’s official site, lead singer John Darnielle explains, “For years bands have been pretty judicious about playing unreleased new material, because much of it becomes available online immediately…we are done with that whole philosophy.”
He does warn that fans interested in a big surprise come album release time should “tread lightly around recordings of these shows,” since the group intends to reveal all in the 2012 tour. “We’re not going to be holding the best ones back for the album release like people tend to do now,” says Darnielle.
The Mountain Goats concluded a summer tour in support of their latest album All Eternals Deck, their first release off of the Merge label.
