A Feverish Trip
As I sit in bed with a 102 fever, I listen to the hypnotic beats of Little Dragon. The album’s title track, “Ritual Union,” draws me in from the very beginning and when the song is over I hit replay. Yet after about the fourth song on the album, I start to get a little bored. The music is still hypnotic and trippy, but I’ve heard it all before. No doubt you have too.
The song “Please Turn” provides a flashback from the ’80s. I see myself in neon tights and big hair. It’s fun, easy to dance to, but not new. The same sound is especially strong on “Precious,” which could easily have been written by Prince. I see myself in some European night club. The dance floor is crowded with beautiful people, and sweaty bodies are gyrating and bumping into each other as Brush The Heat blares from the sound system. Just when I think I have Little Dragon figured out, they surprise me with “Summertearz.” It’s tribal and sexy in an organic sort of way that makes you wish there were more songs like this on this album.
Little Dragon is an excellent pop band. If you want music to dance to, then you can’t beat Ritual Union. As I hit reply on the title track, my only wish is that the material was more original and that the band would take more risks.
