Underworld Announced As Music Directors For 2012 London Olympic Games

The organizing committee for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games have announced that British electronic band Underworld have been appointed Music Directors for the opening ceremonies proceedings.

The Underworld duo Rick Smith and Karl Hyde are joining forces with British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony. He will head up the three-hour ceremony taking place on July 27.

Underworld and Danny Boyle have collaborated since Underworld’s “Born Slippery,” was featured in Boyle’s 1996 cult-classic Trainspotting. Since then, Smith and Hyde have supplied music for A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, and co-scored the sci-fi film Sunshine.

“Appointing Underworld to direct the music in the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the final piece of the jigsaw for the team of leading British creatives who will deliver the ceremonies,” says Boyle.

The creative minds behind this year’s opening ceremonies were announced in May 2010, and include Stephen Daldry, Mark Fisher, Hamish Hamilton, and Catherine Ugwu, were appointed as Executive Producers across all four Ceremonies, with Boyle as artistic director.
