Metal heads, rejoice: as previously reported in October, Megadeth’s massive metal music festival Gigantour is returning to the United States and Canada to raise some post apocalyptic new year’s hell in 2012. The tour dates have been announced, and this year the package festival will begin on January 26 at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ and
This year’s Gigantour will be the first since 2008. Tickets for the event went on sale November 4, just three days after the release of Megadeth’s thirteenth studio album, aptly titled TH1RT3EN. Megadeth front-man and guitar legend Dave Mustaine started the festival in 2005 in an effort to bring an affordable festival package to fans that also allowed him to play along with other like-minded musicians in a high-energy environment. Megadeth is currently on tour in Latin America right now in support of TH1RT3EN.
The supporting acts can hardly be called that- danish heavy metal/ pyschobilly band Volbeat’s guitarist and vocalist Michael Poulson said in a recent press release that the offer to play with Megadeth and Motörhead- two bands he considers to be among the “biggest/best and most important bands in heavy rock music” and as an inspiration to himself and the band- was an honor they could not refuse.
Legendary Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister acknowledged the variety between the sounds of his band, Megadeth, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, saying in a press release that he is looking forward to working with the younger bands.
“The whole bill itself is pretty diverse,” Lemmy said, “and I advise anyone who likes being deaf and/or can lip read already to come out and see what the stuff that doesn’t get on the MTV Music Awards sounds like. Gigantour is just that!”
This will be the second time that Italian gothic metal band Lacuna Coil will be performing at Gigantour after the festival’s 2007 Australian run, where they joined Static X, Devil Driver and Bring Me the Horizon. Megadeth isn’t the only band on the tour releasing an album at the same time- as previously reported, Lacuna Coil’s sixth studio album Dark Adrenaline is set to be released January 24 after being pushed back from its original October 11 release date.
