Okkervil River once again surprises fans with a free EP containing cover songs. They have made Golden Opportunities 2 available for download at their website.
Golden Opportunities Mixtape dropped in 2007 as a free EP to their fans. The EP was recorded while the band was on the road touring their previous album, The Stage Names. This gift to their fans was comprised of cover songs from the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell and more. Golden Opportunities 2 will be released in the same vein as their last free EP, composed of conceptually based cover songs.
There are two noticeable differences between this new EP and its predecessor. Golden Opportunities contains covers from lesser known musicians (track list included below). Also, rather than being recorded on the move, the new EP was recorded entirely live on a two-track tape at Austin studio Premium. This gives the songs a very loose and relaxed sound. Rather than the larger than life style of layered compositions that Okkervil River is celebrated for mastering, Golden Opportunities 2 establishes a more raw and mysterious sonic texture because of how it was recorded.
