Listen to tracks from Karen O’s Stop the Virgens

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and co-writer Sam Spiegel have debuted their newest rock opera-esque project, Stop the Virgens, as part of the Brooklyn-based festival The Creators Project. They stopped by the WNYC radio studio in October for an interview about their creative endeavor and to perform some tracks from the show.

When asked why they didn’t choose to describe Virgens as the assumed “rock-opera,” Karen O responded, “Psycho-opera sort of fit the psychedelic, semi-psychotic vibe of the project that we’re working on.”

The group wanted to stray from the typical and convey an “other worldly” mindset. Even the misspelling of the title was intentional. All tracks from the show had been recorded in 2004 when the project first began, and they hope to release a soundtrack for purchase.

In the show, Karen O calls upon her roughly sweet vocals on tunes like “Duet” (with guitarist Jason P. Grisell) and “Calm.”

Hear the track “Duet” here, and check out Pitchfork’s interview with Karen O and Sam Spiegel, which includes the tracks “Duet” and “Calm.”
