South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord has announced plans for the release of their second album, Tensions, due out in January.
The Capetown-based trio made stateside headlines in 2009 when South African cinematographer Rob Malpage collaborated with the group’s lead vocalist, Ninja, on a video for their single, “Enter the Ninja.”
The video became so popular that the site’s South African hosting provider disabled the group’s account due to massive bandwidth overage. Following the video’s release on a U.S.-based hosting provider, the group signed on with Interscope Records, who have handled artists include Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Marilyn Manson, and Lady Gaga.
The group performed their first international concert at Coachella Music Festival, and went on to a full U.S. tour featuring songs from their debut album, $O$.
According to Spin, the group has said that Tensions will be “freakier and more absurd,” than $O$, “yet simultaneously smart and culturally relevant.”
Look out for the new record in January, and be sure to check out the group’s official site for a look at current videos and biography.
