As we reported last week, Bjork’s upcoming highly-hyped album Biophilia will include bonus live disc featuring material from the artist’s recent run of Manchester dates when it is released on October 11 via Nonesuch Records. Until then, you can stream the album in its entirety thanks to NPR.
Biophilia is arguably Bjork’s largest project to date, with an interactive iPad app that allows users to manipulate and mashup each track being released to support the album. According to NPR, the Icelandic singer-songwriter did research into a slew of scientific fields and theories—including string theory, astrophysics and biology–in order to produce the album in the most accurate way possible and provide listeners with a learning experience.
Apps aside, Biophilia is a stunning effort that is rather minimalist in comparison to her 2007 effort, Volta. Interestingly, there are no instances of guitar or piano on the entire album, with Bjork opting for more non-traditional means of musical production for her backing tracks, including Tesla coils, pendulums and what she calls the “gravity harp.” Bjork’s trademark voice remains just that, and it unflinchingly leads the album with haunting melodies and chants on the beginnings of existence.
The result of Bjork’s efforts for Biophilia is a densely layered piece of art that, if nothing else, speaks volumes to the musical and artistic inspiration that she channeled in order to get to the final result.
