While collaborations at festivals are fairly common, this unique mingling of Portishead and Public Enemy still seems out of left field, even though the two groups performed in succession on the last night of ATP Asbury Park.
Any reservation this pairing might cause on paper is quickly alleviated by the actual performance, as Portishead’s “Machine Gun,” from Third becomes a canvas for Chuck D to drop a verse from It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back‘s “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos.”
