Jerry Leiber, Songwriter Of “Hound Dog” And More, Dead At 78

Jerry Leiber, half of the Leiber and Stoller songwriting group that produced numerous rock ‘n’ roll hits in the 1950s and ’60s, died on August 22.

Leiber passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center due to cardiopulmonary failure.

Along with writing partner Mike Stoller, Leiber penned numerous energetic songs including “Hound Dog” for Elvis Presley and “Is That All There Is?” for Peggy Lee. The duo’s songs were known for having mischievous and humorous lyrics meant for younger listeners while gently poking fun at the older generation.

Many artists have also recorded music written by Leiber and Stoller, like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin.

Leiber is survived by sons Jed, Oliver and Jake; two grandchildren and a sister.
