While continuing its tradition of bringing the party to Grant Park in Chicago, Lollapalooza will return to Chile for its second year and make its debut in Brazil in 2012.
The festival will play at O’Higgins Park in Santiago March 31-April 1, then move to the Jockey Club in Sao Paulo, the largest city in South America, the following weekend, April 7-8. American festival goers can catch the usual action August 3-5, as they have for the past 20 years.
“The Brazilians have a very rich history of celebration. If we can rub together with them, there’s no telling what heights that party will reach,” said Lollapalooza creator and Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell.
The announcement came earlier this month at the Lollapalooza press conference. Line-up details will be announced at a yet-unknown later date.
The Chilean and Brazilian versions of Lollapalooza will bring the all-ages Kidzapalooza stage for families like their Chicago counterparts. Local artists from Chile and Brazil will appear in addition to the international headliners that audiences have come to expect from Lollapalooza.
The Killers, Jane’s Addiction, and Kanye West headlined Lollapalooza Chile earlier this year, while the Chicago fest saw Eminem, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket, and deadmau5 take the stage.
Lollapalooza began in 1991 and has acted as a launch pad for countless top musical acts, including Jane’s Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, the Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Alice in Chains, the Beastie Boys, and Snoop Dogg.
