Anthrax Bassist Frank Bello to Play Richard Hell in Upcoming Jeff Buckley Biopic, Greetings from Tim Buckley

Two biopics about the life of beloved indie singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley are apparently in the making, and Anthrax Bassist Frank Bello will be playing punk icon Richard Hell in one of them. More after the jump.

Anthrax performing at the Big 4 festival in Indio, CA. 23 April 2011.

One biopic, starring Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgely as Buckley, revolves around the subject’s 1991 benefit concert for his father.  The other, which stars Reeve Carney as Buckley, was approved by the artist’s estate and will feature his actual music.

Since the Badgely version, entitled Greetings from Tim Buckley, centers around a performance, it will also feature high profile musicians—namely, Richard Hell, who performed at that show.  Bello will take over the duty of playing the seminal (to punk, anyway) Hell.

This will not be Bello’s first foray into acting, as the bassist has appeared on Law & Order intermittently in the past. No word on whether he’ll sing or go full pop star and lip-synch.

Filming for the biopic started this week.
