Interview with Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria

Warped Tour newcomers and English metalcore band Asking Alexandria have been a contemporary hit with international youth. Stepping away from the onslaught of adoring fans, frontman Danny Worsnop spares a few minutes to talk about everything from sex to drugs to music piracy with MXDWN.

Great set out there today.

Thanks.

How did you prepare for your set today?

Just jump right in.

You have no problems with the grueling heat or hectic set times?

No. I have a problem with not being on drugs. I don’t do them drugs anymore. It does make it hard, because touring is much more fun on drugs.

Definitely. Is this your first sober tour?

Yeah.

Oh, I feel for you. Especially in this heat.

I know. I was in Las Vegas yesterday. Out hotel was full of cocaine and I couldn’t have any.

How do you deal with that? Do you go to the local NA meetings?

No, I’ve already done all of that shit. I just have sex instead.

Sex is a drug in its own right.

It certainly is.

Do you have a new album coming out?

We just came out with a new album. We are working on another one and I have a solo album coming out. It’s going to be bitchin’.

When is that going to come out?

When I finish it.

Any ballpark?

It’s going to come out before I die.

Did you play any of those songs today?

Not with the band. this one is just me.

Being from England, how do you find the Warped Tour?

Warped Tour, for us, looks like the inside of a bus.

Haha! Yeah, all of the photos taken of Warped Tour should be from the inside of a bus.

That’s the real Warped Tour.

Do you have a UK equivalent?

Our festivals are just single days or maybe 3 day things because England is tiny.

Obviously it’s a lot denser population-wise. Do you have large festivals with multiple stages?

Yeah, just that they’re three days long.

What is the craziest thing you’ve seen so far this week on Warped Tour?

The entire catalogue of Hell pulled out of my guitarist’s nose today. I saw some really big dude get carried off by a load of other dudes. I saw someone get stomped to a pulp yesterday.

I’ve been doing Warped Tour for a long time now and I’m glad to see the return of mosh pits, because they went away for awhile and then they came back.

I’m just glad rock and roll is coming back. A lot of people love rock and roll but don’t have the balls to do it. You’ve got to be rock n roll to play rock and roll.

I love attitude on that. A lot of people talk shit but I love you guys. Have you seen anyone perform that you didn’t think you would like, but actually enjoyed.

You know, I haven’t seen anyone perform yet. I’m going to start my viewing today.

Is there anything you want to add?

Don’t illegally download anything.

You’ve never pirated anything?

No, nobody should.  Buy music.

Of course, people should be buying music, but a lot of bands now just give away shit, like free for download from their website knowing that people are going to be pirating their music anyway.

Those people are killing music.

By giving it away?

Yeah. That makes kids think it’s okay. They are the bands who are complaining that they don’t have a lot of money because they are giving away all of their music for free.

There are a lot of ways to approach that. A lot of people rely solely on concerts to make money.

Yeah, we are fortunate enough that we can make money selling CDs, but not a lot of bands do and that’s not fair.

Alright, well, we’re looking forward to your solo stuff. Enjoy the rest of your tour.
