RIP Amy Winehouse, Found Dead in North London Home

Volatile English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead of undetermined causes at the age of 27 today in her home in northern London’s Camden Square. She was 27.

Winehouse was discovered dead in her Camden Square flat around 4:00 pm London time by police and paramedics. The cause of her death remains as yet undetermined.

According to the BBC, fans from across London have made the pilgrimage to Winehouse’s former home to leave candles, bouquets of flowers and mementos in remembrance of the singer. In addition to fans, the scene was also populated by over a dozen police officers keeping guard outside Winehouse’s home.

The singer-songwriter’s death comes just one month after she canceled her European tour as a result of a botched performance in Belgrade that saw her booed offstage.  That disastrous gig consisted primarily of Winehouse fumbling through her own songs for about an hour and a half while intermittently leaving the stage.

After that performance, Winehouse enrolled in a London rehab program for alcohol abuse. Her public life was fraught with drama over well-publicized substance abuse and mental health issues.

First breaking onto the music scene with her 2003 album Frank, Winehouse eventually gained notoriety with her pentuple-Grammy winning 2006 album Back to Black.

Fans and friends have been devastated by her death, with Back to Black producer Mark Ronson calling today “one of the saddest days of my life.” Other friends have taken to Twitter.

“Very very sad day. Just lost a great friend and a sister. RIP my baby sis Cherry Winehouse. Love ya always,” tweeted producer Salaam Remi.

“I Can’t even breath right now I’m crying to hard I just lost 1 of my best friends. I love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!” read one tweet from Kelly Osbourne.

Winehouse’s last public appearance was this past Wednesday, when she joined her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield onstage at Camden’s Roundhouse for the fifth annual iTunes festival.

MXDWN extends its deepest sympathies to Amy Winehouse’s family, friends and fans.
