Four years after the release of their latest album, “Under The Blacklight,” Rilo Kiley‘s lead guitarist Blake Sennet tells Spinner the harrowing condition of the band’s current relationship that seems more like a flat out statement of disbandment.
Sennet had the following to say about the band’s current state:
“I just felt like there was a lot of deception, disloyalty, greed and things I don’t really want to submit myself to. I had related that frustration to music but I just thought, ‘I’m not going to put myself in that position again,’ so I said, ‘Fuck that, I can’t do this anymore…I was mad at music– and it wasn’t music’s fault. It was our fault as bandmembers, or partners, or friends.”
Sennet went on to badmouth the groups last effort “Under The Blacklight” stating the following:
“I think that it could have been our best but I think we were under pressure. There were some of our best songs on that record but some of our worst songs. Like, ‘Dejalo’ and ’15’ — I didn’t like those songs. They’re OK, but we have a ton of old tracks that are better than a lot of the stuff that did make the record.”
Sennet didn’t mention any names as far as who was the main culprit in the split but he did mention that the band will attempt to release a double-disc album containing unreleased songs in the near future and that will likely be the bands final release.
Meanwhile Sennet has his own respective side project, The Elected, which apparently was an output for songs that didn’t make the Rilo Kiley cut but has since become the primary vessel for creative output.
