The Recording Industry Association of America ramped up its battle with music downloading earlier this week, obtaining subpoenas from the US District of Columbia to get the names and IP addresses of the individuals behind three major torrent sites.
The affected sites are Monova.org. Bitsnoop.com and Limetorrents.com, with the RIAA now demanding information such as the identities, email addresses and IP addresses of the people who run the aforementioned sites.
This is step up from the RIAA’s usual shenanigans, as they usually are content with prosecuting (persecuting?) individual downloaders and standard P2P services like Limewire.
“We believe your service is hosting the above-referenced website on its network. This website offers direct links to files containing sound recordings for other users to download by such artists as Lady Gaga, Micheal Jackson, Coldplay, Madonna and Kanye West. As stated in the attached subpoena, you are required to disclose to the RIAA information sufficient to identify the infringer. This would include the individual’s IP-address and e-mail address,” read an RIAA-written letter to Whoisgaurd.com.
What the RIAA plans to do with the requested information that subpoenaed sites are required to provide remains unclear, but lawsuits regarding incurred damages don’t seem to be far off.
