An unlikely pair has seemingly created magic. Reed joined the band in their studio north of San Francisco for a series of rapid sessions. As of this posting the album is 90% done, but not yet titled.
The album is set to include ten songs composed by Reed with arrangement contributions by the band. The album is said to bring up feelings of Reed’s classic, Berlin, and Metallica’s Master of Puppets.
Metallica drummer Lars Urich has stated that while the album is nearly completed, there are no current plans for release, as neither act have current record deals. The album began as a plan to record covers of lesser-known Reed songs, but evolved into an album of songs Reed had written for a play.
James Hetfield of Metallica told Rolling Stone, “Lars and I listened to the stuff, and it was like, ‘Wow, this is very different.’ It was scary at first, because the music was so open. But then I thought, ‘This could go anywhere.’”
Reed echoed Hetfield’s enthusiasm, saying ““I knew it from the first day we played together: ‘Oh, man, this is perfection, right in front of me…they’re bringing Metallica, with all that power. And because they’re pretty sophisticated…wherever I go, they’re still with me.”
Reed and Metallica first joined together in October 2009, at the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York.
