The Roots Sprout Details on Next Album

Though the title is under tight wraps with only two sketches of songs composed at the time, The Roots drummer ?uestlove and vocalise MC Black Thought taunted the music press and fans alike during an interview with Billboard.com about their next album.

For their 10th LP to date, The Roots have gone full stream into their musical arts.  After decades of releasing albums brimming with soulful hip-hop songs laced with a fine taste for jazz and instrumentation, the group will compose this upcoming album with the intention of making it a concept album.

“This is going to be our first full-fledged narrative concept album,” ?uestlove told Billboard.com

Musically the album will focus it’s influence on early 1900’s orchestral chamber music, a musical form that recently inspired ?uestlove after performing for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in April.

“It’s going to be heavy on sort of orchestral chamber music with harder beats in it,” said ?uestlove.

While playing in the PIFA project, Philly-Paris Lockdown, ?uestlove along with 18 featured classical musicians performed chamber pieces from French composers such as Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel, and Russian native French naturalized Igor Stravinsky.

For the narrative-concept aspect of the album, Black Thought hinted that the direction will be similar to their previous album, How I Got Over, in the sense of the album moving from dark to light but reversed.

“Instead of from dark to light, it’s an album that goes from light to dark,” said Black Thought.

Although The Roots are not sure when the album will drop, they have begun working on it intently despite other musical ventures.

For Black Thought, the album will release in November if we found ourselves living in a perfect world.  Since we don’t, the lead MC suspects the album will come out early next year.
