Though the Smashing Pumpkins will be releasing remastered versions of several albums this fall, former frontman Billy Corgan says they will not be reuniting – ever.
Gish, Siamese Dream, and 1994 compilation Pisces Iscariot will hit shelves for a second release. The extra tracks included with the reissues will have to satisfy, as Corgan confirmed that there will be no more output of new material from the band. The band, who broke up in 2000, played a farewell concert in December of that year before reuniting in 2005 and then breaking up for a final time in 2008.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Aeroplane Flies High, and Adore will see a release next year. Machina/The Machines of God and the yet commercially unreleased Machina II/Friends and Enemies of Modern Music will drop in 2013.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Corgan said:
No. That’s just one of those things that are never going to happen. If you don’t see somebody for a while, there’s the old thing, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Well, we haven’t had absence. The things that have happened between us in the interim haven’t been good. There’s been lawsuits and lots of stupid stuff. It’s only made it worse. If it was bad before, it’s really bad now. Jimmy [Chamberlin] and I aren’t enemies -– he’s just off doing what he wants to do, as he should. There’s not super bad blood between me and Jimmy that we’d never get on stage again. But I cannot in any way, shape, or form ever envision standing on a stage, playing music again with James [Iha] and D’arcy [Wretzky]. I just don’t see any situation where that would be possible.
