Mercury Records, the label of well-known acts like U2, The Killers, and Arcade Fire, announced Friday that they will no longer be issuing CD and vinyl versions of their singles.
Only physical releases “guaranteed to make a profit” will be offered from this point forth, though they will be becoming more and more of a commodity.
The sale of vinyl records has decreased 85% between 2006 and 2010. Contrast this to the growing popularity of digital downloads, and it might seem apparent why the label is taking their business in this direction.
