Interview with Opio

As I sit down with Opio, he is excited to begin the interview and discuss all that he has recently been working on.

What have you been busy producing lately?

I’ve got an EP coming out in a month. Then I’m spending a bit more time on my album. The next EP is 4 tracks with varying tempos from 100 to 140.

What future collaborations are you excited about?

Ill Gates, a beats producer from Toronto, Canada. One of my tracks will be featured on his album coming out next month. I did some work with the Funguniers from Canada as well. I met a huge crew of MCs recently from Portland to San Fran, so future collaborations would be really fun.

Yeah, there are some great underground musicians all along the coast. Who are some of your favorite underground artists?

Tipper is one of my original inspirations. There are so many people out there doing amazing music.

Legend has it that Tipper is going to be doing a project with Mr. Rogers and Love and Light.

Oh really? That would be amazing. They did some remix work with me just recently.

Do you think you’re recently coming up from the underground music scene and into popular mainstream music?

I can’t judge it here in America, but in Australia for sure. I got a lot of radio play down there.

How does that effect your music?

I try not to concentrate on it.

What are you concentrating on when you’re making music?

It depends. I try to drown out everything else in the studio when I’m making music. Other than that, it’s just chill and downtempo.

What sort of music production software are you using?

I use Logic Pro 9. I’ve had a virus since then.

Do you feel comfortable and well versed in using that technology?

Yeah. Maybe not as well as some other people, but it’s more about the idea than how well you can use it.

What are your dream collaborations you fantasize about?

It’s funny, there are a lot of producers within not just the underground electronic music realm but the hip-hop realm and drum and bass realm that really would be interesting to work with. Lately I’m excited to work with MCs though. A lot of them are starting to branch over into this kind of music. It’s exciting. If I could write a tune with Noisia, I think that would be a dream collaboration.
