To a sparse crowd at the annual day stage atop the Austin Convention Center, Nice Cave fav’ Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers rocked with wreckless abandon. For the uninitiated, Ray plays a makeshift accordion mounted on a pedestal while backed by guitar, bass and drum players. To the nonstop blast of accordion shrieks, Ray howled and wailed like a possessed harpy. Much like Psychic TV last night, this performance had a raw garage punk energy. At larger crowds and events she’s sure to play this week at SXSW, this will rock the crowd.
