Dynamite? Or Bomb?
While The Twilight Singers’ fifth album isn’t exactly taking any “dynamite steps” anywhere, Dynamite Steps provides you with more than 41 minutes of powerful and emotional rock and roll. Singer/songwriter Greg Dulli lets his listeners into his cathartic and daunting world.
Dulli, having gone through his share of past band mates, takes most of the control. He howls and wails through all 11 tracks, and while some would consider his vocals to be off-key, it adds a rawness and sincerity that is hard to find in other vocalists. “Get Lucky” is one of the album’s best tracks, with the keys setting the tempo and is reinforced with guitarist Dave Rosser’s licks and Dulli’s vocals: “Tell me does it scare you while I look the other way/Through the walls into your very soul/I get lucky sometimes.”
“Blackbird and the Fox” features a duet between Dulli and Ani DiFranco, and together they belt out haunting one-liners (“Cold-blooded, but some like it freezing,” “I’ll make ‘em bleed for my baby bird”) followed by more of Rosser’s compelling riffs.
No, this album is not Grammy-winning material, but it’s a theatrical and dynamic record that takes you into Dulli’s secret diary.
