Opening for rockers Dr. Dog, Brooklyn indie-folk band Here We Go Magic played for a sold out show at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego. The five-piece band, made up of lead-singer Luke Temple, Michael Bloch, drummer Peter Hale, bassist Jen Turner and Kristina Lieberson played off their latest release from Secretly Canadian, Pigeons.
The swooping sounds of “Fangela” were initially lost on the disengaged crowd, but a quick story about their van getting caught on fire perked up the ears of the San Diego hipsters. The crowd was anxiously awaiting the laid-back pop rock sounds that are such a natural hit in Southern California.
It took the overly packed room of concert goers a good five songs and a few beers from the bar before they started to appreciate the expansive arrangement of musical talent that is Here We Go Magic, but by the end of the set, they had converted the audience of non-musical believers. “Collector” caught the attention of the audience with it’s slow build of vibrant keys. That got the audience grooving while “Casual” continued the momentum for the crowd.
Luke Temple and bass player Jennifer Turner had proven to be stars in their own rights, and it would be worth every penny, and beer or two, to see this band perform live.
