The Flaming Lips To Release New Music in 2011…But No Album?

The psychedelic American rockers have recorded and released a total nearly 20 albums since the band’s debut. As for the fast approaching new year, however, they’re taking an entirely new route.   Lead singer Wayne Coyne has spoken for the rest of the group on their decision to release their music with a whole new twist: The Flaming Lips will be releasing new song every month while also filming the recording and production of each track.
The Flaming Lips have always been a band to surprise and awe their fans; keeping them under suspense yet very excited.  From their intricate, bizarre lyrics to their equally bizarre yet brilliant psychedelic melodies, the band always finds new ways to impress their ever-increasing fan base.

What’s in store for 2011 is something nearly unheard of when it comes to a band putting out new music.  While musicians traditionally release full-length albums, The Flaming Lips have decided to release songs individually (one a month) as well as capturing each song’s production on film.  The band is focusing on the process of creation and capturing that creation rather than producing a pile of songs all at once.

While speaking to Rolling Stone, Coyne bluntly touches base on his band’s new way of releasing their upcoming music:

“We just want to [release the material] some other way…Not that I think the old way was boring, but to spend another two years with same 13 songs, it’s just like fuck.”

So far, the band has made the initial decision, and that’s all we know for now.  They haven’t settled on what the music will be format just yet.

“The dilemma is whether we’re going to release it on vinyl, cereal boxes, or some of it on toys we make,”  Coyne says.

Stay posted to hear more details drop about the band’s exciting music project set for 2011.
