Jeff Mangum Resurfaces for Surprise Set of Neutral Milk Hotel Classics

Like some sort of indie rock Sasquatch, Jeff Mangum of 90’s acid-carnival-rock band Neutral Milk Hotel (Merge Records) has made sparing public appearances since a self-imposed exile from music in 1999. But over the weekend, Mangum played a surprise solo set of NMH classics in Brooklyn.

Emerging from wherever he’s been recently, Mangum played a 10-song set at the Schoolhouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn on Saturday. Audio of five of the songs is available here. Check out the setlist below:

Oh Comely
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Gardenhead
Engine
Ghost
King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1
Song Against Sex
Naomi
Two Headed Boy
Two Headed Boy Pt. 2

This was Mangum’s second high-profile appearance this year. In May, Mangum played a short set at a benefit for musician Chris Knox. There’s no word on any future appearance, but we’ll keep you posted.
