Multi-talented musician Kanye West was brought onto MSNBC’s Today Show to speak with Matt Lauer. The main topic of conversation was Kanye’s infamous bash on George W. Bush following the Katrina disaster: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Check out the interview video after the jump.
In the interview, Lauer is looking for some kind of apology or evidence of regret from Kanye. He insists that the star observes Bush’s body language and emotion as the former president is questioned about Kanye’s comment in a past interview.
Kanye strikes back, claiming he knows that Bush was distraught over the comment. He didn’t need a second look at the video.
“I didn’t need you guys to show me the tape in order to, like, prompt my emotion to what I’m gonna say,” he starts. “I mean, pre-looking at his face, I came up here because I wanted to say something to him right after the fact…I would tell George Bush in my moment of frustration that I didn’t have the grounds to call him a racist.”
While many interpret this as an apology, he later goes on to subtly defend himself, claiming that while his emotions drove him to make the comment, it was a just a good ol’ “think before you speak” failure.
“Even in these times where I was considered to have done something so wrong, my motivation was from a good place. Maybe mistimed, not using the wording, not realizing the power of my words. but none the less, it’s very pure and from a good place.”
Later in the interview, as if you haven’t guessed, the Taylor Swift drama is taken off the back burner, and Kanye is reminded of yet another mistake of his. While the clip is shown because Kanye feels empathy towards Bush (both accused of racism), it is taken out of proportion when the footage is shown during mid-sentence. Kanye instantly becomes offended, as showcased in his tweets. One of his tweets described the interview as flat out “brutal.”
