An impressive line up of same-minded musicians spanning the world of folk and rock have come together to release their debut self-titled album Works Progress Administration – named after the 1939 New Deal agency to employ millions to carry out public works – is perfectly timed in more ways than one.
Formerly known as The Scrolls, WPA met at the Los Angeles Club Largo and from there grew and grew to include Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) Luke Bulla (fiddler player for Lyle Lovett, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas and more) Greg Leisz (pedal steel player with Joni Mitchell, Bill Frizell) Benmont Tench (piano; Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) Pete Thomas (drummer; Elvis Costello & The Imposters) Davey Faragher (bassist; Elvis Costello & The Imposters) Sara Watkins & Sean Watkins (fiddler and guitarist with Nickel Creek) just to name a few.
The album is the perfect blend of every band member’s greatest strength that is a perfect high note for a debut release. “Always Have My Love” kicks things off with an upbeat tempo that keep you tapping your foot and excited to hear more. “Good As Ever” closely follows second to keep the tempo going with an unmistakable energy and ingenious arrangements that would make any folk rocker jealous. “Cry For You” mellows the album up adding another layer to the zealous album, while the real highlights are Sara Watkin’s cover of Ray Davies’ “I Go To Sleep” which accentuates her angelic voice and Tenchs’ “The Price”
There is no doubt that this album and this band have become a home for some of the folks accomplished rockers, and working together cohesively to make some amazing music has proven successful. Works Progress Administration has found a home among the likes of inspiration and imagination, and isn’t that what we need a little of right now?
