Lots of Trash, Nothing to Treasure
First impressions can sometimes be hit or miss. The same can be said for music, and it’s easy to make a hit, and even easier to miss. The Fall are in the latter category with their new album Your Future Our Clutter. Older artists all too often continue to release albums long after their expiration date. In some cases, it’s a complete success. Sadly, this isn’t one of them.
Twenty-eight studio albums is a lot of music. Most of that can be considered “good” or “popular,” if that can be said about punk music. The Fall’s latest album, to put it lightly, is horrible. Their so called “singing” sounds more like a melodic form of spoken word and the only redemptive qualities of the album are the guitar rifts and drum beats. This point is proven sevenfold with the song “Chino.” Age seems to have caught up with them, and tragically, it only worsens their image as a genuine punk band.
If you’re looking for an album to rock out to, or to play in your basement with your anarchist friends, look elsewhere. Maybe, if they know what’s good for them, they won’t release another album, but seeing as they’re out at twenty-eight, why not go for thirty?
